Under the Australian Consumer Law, a business must not accept payment↗ for services it knows it cannot supply in a reasonable time. If a service has a major problem, you can cancel and get a refund↗, and a business can't take away your right to a refund↗. Gift cards bought since 1 November 2019 must last at least 3 years↗.
The pitch at the counter is simple: pay for ten now, save half. It is often a genuine saving. It also moves the risk onto you, because the clinic has your money and you have a promise of appointments.
How much does a pack actually save?
Enough to be worth considering. During a packages sale, one Melbourne clinic listed these prices per session, one at a time against a prepaid pack of ten.

The saving is real only if you use the sessions. DermNet puts laser hair removal at 3 to 6 sessions or more↗, so a pack of ten prepays at least four sessions past that range.
What if the clinic cannot deliver the sessions?
A business must not accept payment↗ for services it does not intend to supply, or knows or should know it cannot supply by the promised date or within a reasonable time. If appointments stop being available, or the clinic keeps pushing you out by months, put your request in writing and keep the reply.
What if a treatment goes wrong?
Services carry consumer guarantees. When a service has a major problem, you can choose to cancel and get a refund↗. A "no refunds" sign at reception or a line in a contract does not override it: businesses can't take away your right to a refund↗ for faulty products or services.
Do beauty gift vouchers expire?
Gift cards bought on or after 1 November 2019 must be redeemable for at least 3 years↗, with exceptions such as temporary promotions, and they must carry no post-purchase fees↗. A card bought today should therefore still work in 2029.

What should you check before you prepay?
- How many sessions are in the pack, against the number you are likely to need.
- When the sessions expire, and whether that date appears on your receipt or contract.
- Whether the per-session price is a sale price that ends before you finish the course.
- What happens to unused sessions if you move, or stop treatment on medical advice.
