Laser hair removal cost, by body area

Single-session prices from two published clinic price lists, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne, and what they add up to over a course.

Checked

Published single-session prices run from $25 for underarms in Sydney to $600 for full body in Melbourne. Full legs cost $195 in Sydney and $220 in Melbourne. DermNet says treatment needs 3 to 6 sessions or more, so budget for a course, not a visit.

A single underarm session at $25 sounds like nothing. Six of them, which is the top of the range a dermatology reference gives, is a different conversation. That gap between the advertised price and the course price is where most of the confusion about laser hair removal lives.

What does each body area cost per session?

The Sydney figures come from Laser Sydney, which has clinics in Campbelltown and Carnes Hill, using its women's prices. The Melbourne figures come from Victorian Laser & Skin Clinic, which lists one set of prices for five locations.

Two areas appear on only one of the lists. Melbourne prices an upper lip at $40 and full body, including face and neck, at $600. Sydney's list adds men's prices, which the Melbourne list does not.

What does a full course cost?

Multiply the session price by the sessions you expect. DermNet's range is 3 to 6 sessions or more. At six sessions, before any package discount:

  • Full legs: $1,170 at the Sydney price, $1,320 at the Melbourne price.
  • Underarms: $150 in Sydney, $240 in Melbourne.

Those totals are our arithmetic on the published prices. The calculator does the same sum for any area and session count, and shows which clinic price it used.

Do men pay more?

On the Sydney list, yes. Laser Sydney prices men's full legs at $279, against $195 for women, and men's lower legs at $185. The Melbourne list we checked does not split its prices by sex at all.

Are prepaid packs cheaper per session?

They can be, with a catch. During a packages sale, the Melbourne clinic listed full legs at $110 a session inside a prepaid 10-treatment pack, against $220 for one session. That pack costs $1,100 up front and buys ten sessions when a dermatology reference suggests you may need six. Read your rights on prepaid packages before you hand over the money.

Why do two clinics charge different amounts?

Some of the gap is real, and some of it is wording. A Brazilian on the Sydney list and a Hollywood Brazilian including the rear on the Melbourne list are not the same treatment. Half legs are not always lower legs. Before you treat one clinic as cheaper, read the area description, then check where the clinic is: both Sydney prices here come from the city's south-west, not the inner east.

Who is allowed to operate the laser?

That depends on your state. ARPANSA reports cosmetic laser use is regulated in Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia, and neither New South Wales nor Victoria is on that list. Our guide to cosmetic laser rules by state sets out what each regulator requires, and what to ask when there is no licence to check.
